De Gartconnel Stud van Welsh Mountain Pony’s werd in 1964 opgericht door mijn inmiddels overleden echtgenoot John, met een fokbasis uit de bloedlijnen Coed Coch, Betws en Gredington. In de afgelopen 60 jaar zijn wij deze lijnen trouw gebleven, wat heeft geleid tot pony’s met consistente successen in de aan de hand -, onder het zadel – en menrubrieken, waarbij zij in alle drie de disciplines hebben deelgenomen aan de Horse of the Year Show.
Het is een enorm voorrecht geweest om hoedster van deze bloedlijnen te mogen zijn (die nu worden voortgezet door mijn dochter Louise en haar kinderen) en om daarnaast de leden van de WPCS en mede-liefhebbers te mogen vertegenwoordigen, zowel in de Council als in mijn rol als President. De Gartconnel-pony’s hebben mij over de hele wereld gebracht als jurylid, waar ik prachtige, rastypische dieren heb mogen zien in alle secties van het WPCS-stamboek, en waar ik geweldige mensen heb ontmoet met een enorme passie voor deze moedige en prachtige Welsh pony’s en cobs.
Mijn eigen kennismaking met pony’s en paarden begon bij de Pony Club en de eventing, wat later leidde tot de mendiscipline, zowel privé als op FEI-niveau. Een pony van ongeveer 1.22m was voor mijn lengte namelijk net iets te klein om als rijpaard te dienen! Als jurylid bij zowel de NPS als de BDS vind ik dat de Welsh rassen, met hun verstandige karakter, flamboyantie, schoonheid en uithoudingsvermogen, uitstekende sportpony’s zijn voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen.
Het is werkelijk een grote eer om uitgenodigd te worden om uw International Show 2026 in de Olympic Arena te mogen jureren. Hartelijk dank aan u en uw comité. Ik kijk ernaar uit om collega-leden en mede-liefhebbers te ontmoeten.

‘The Gartconnel Stud of Welsh Mountain Ponies was founded in 1964 by my late husband John, with breeding based on Coed Coch, Betws and Gredington bloodlines. Over the past 60 years we have not strayed far from these bloodlines producing ponies with consistent success in hand, ridden and driven classes and competing in all three disciplines at Horse of the Year Show. It has been an enormous privilege to have been custodian of these bloodlines (now taken forward by my daughter Louise and her children) and also to represent the WPCS membership and fellow enthusiasts both on Council and as President. The Gartconnel ponies have taken me around the globe judging where I have seen some stunning true to type animals representing all sections of the WPCS stud book and met wonderful people with huge passion for these brave and beautiful Welsh ponies and cobs.
My own introduction to ponies and horses was through pony club and eventing which subsequently led to carriage driving, both private and FEI, as a 12 hand pony was a little under horse for my height! As both an NPS and BDS judge, the Welsh breeds with their sensible brain, flamboyance, beauty and stamina make superb performance ponies for both children and adults.
It is indeed a huge honour to be invited to judge your International Show 2026 at the Olympic Arena. Thank you to you and your committee. I look forward to meeting fellow members and enthusiasts.’

Chris breeds Welsh Mountain ponies at the Elargee Stud in South West Victoria Australia. The stud was founded in 1973 by Chris’ parents Gordon and Lana Gray. The stud has run about 20 Section A mares of imported UK breeding and expects about six foals each year.
Elargee Trousseau is one of the most successful ponies bred at Elargee. She has won countless Supremes and medals including Best in hand at the Victorian All Welsh Show. She has also been a grand producer, including Elargee Trou-Belle, herself a Supreme Champion as well as Elargee True Gold, a very successful show pony and now stud sire.
Chris – “I am a Tier 1 judge and Judge Assessor on the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Australia and panel Judge for Section A on the Welsh Pony and Cob Society UK. I have judged all over Australia and New Zealand at medal and Royal shows and in the UK.
I love a well-balanced pony that has real Welsh character. I look for an attractive pony with bone and substance which has a good walk and” is going somewhere.”

Chris fokt Welsh Mountain pony’s op de Elargee Stud in South West Victoria, Australië. De stud werd in 1973 opgericht door Chris’ ouders, Gordon en Lana Gray. De stud heeft ongeveer 20 sectie A merries van geïmporteerde Britse bloedlijnen en verwacht elk jaar zo’n zes veulens.
Elargee Trousseau is een van de meest succesvolle pony’s die bij Elargee is gefokt. Ze heeft talloze Overall titels en medals gewonnen, waaronder Best in Hand op de Victorian All Welsh Show. Ze is ook een uitstekende fokmerrie geweest, met nakomelingen zoals Elargee Trou-Belle, zelf een Supreme Champion, en Elargee True Gold, een die zeer succesvol was in de showring en tegenwoordig een fokhengst is.
